A few months ago the Cannabis Industry Council sent an open letter to the government and stated that a divergence from ‘stifling’ EU rules and regulations could allow the UK’s cannabis industry to flourish.

The letter emphasises the untapped potential of the UK cannabis industry to ‘improve people’s health, boost jobs, and create economic growth.’ In the open letter, the Government is encouraged to depart from EU rules in two areas, namely Novel Foods regulation and the use of the EU Plant Variety Database to determine hemp seeds for cultivation in the UK:

• CBD products sold in the UK are currently licensed under EU Novel Food Regulations, which should be ‘exempt’ from them. 
• It is important to allow non-EU seeds to be used under UK laws, as this will increase choice and competition as well as signal the ‘potential of global Britain’.
